The dumbass factor strikes again…0

If you read it already, then this will be just a little review for you. But I’m just amazed how many people have not yet heard about this bizarre story.

Doug Angelin, a senior at Milton High School in Milton, Massachusetts, is suing the school system for being discriminatory against males. The suit is a bit confusing, because he has mixed some trivial points in with his basic premise. But in essence, he says that the problem is that the system rewards girls for behaving in a girl-like manner - in other words, for following rules, studying, and turning in assignments on time - and punishes boys for behaving in a “boy-like” manner - challenging the rules, arguing with teachers, and doing academic work either late or of low quality, if at all.

He acts like this is a system that has changed recently, ignoring the fact that boys have always been rewarded for doing the same high quality work that girls are doing. The only difference is that nowadays, more and more boys are choosing to goof off in school instead of studying and working on assignments, while girls, no longer saddled with restrictive rules, are working harder and excelling.

Now it’s pretty obvious to me that he’s a boy who has suddenly realized that all the goofing-off he’s done in school has resulted in grades that will keep him out of the sort of college his litigious father had been intending to send him to.

I see boys like this every day. They are dumbasses, guys who have consciously chosen to read nothing, study nothing, and learn nothing. Girls roll their eyes at guys who ask the stupidest questions of them in class. The girls sit in study hall and work on assignments or read, while the boys sit, catatonic, listening to their headphones, breaking things for no reason, or talking about nothing at all with each other.

I have a study hall that supposedly begins with a five minute silent reading period (what a stressful task, eh?) where only three of the twelve students present actually reads. Three minutes into that silent reading time I noticed that the worst-behaved boy in class had positioned his backpack on his table so that it was blocking what he was apparently doing. Red flag for me! I stood up, walked over, and told him to take it down. As he did, I saw him slipping a DVD player into his backpack.

How dumb can somebody get? He must have thought I’m as dumb as he is, thinking I wouldn’t notice it for the entire period.

So what is Doug’s proposed solution to this systemic educational discrimination? He says that boys should retroactively receive inflated grades. They should receive higher grades for the same work that girls do. They should be given academic credit for playing sports. They should be allowed to take academic subjects on a pass-fail basis for full academic credit.

You’d almost think that his father believes this nonsense, in spite of the fact that, as a lawyer, he got where he is by following rules, reading, studying, and turning in assignments on time.

I rest my case.
